Peloponnese?
Peloponnese – the culinary heart of Greece
The Peloponnese is like the heart of mainland Greece, where history, nature and taste meet. The region is known for its unique food culture: the Nemean wine valleys produce world-famous red wines, Kalamata is the olive capital of the world thanks to its olives and olive oil, and each village has its own traditional dish that is passed down from generation to generation.
It's no coincidence that Greeks head to the Peloponnese for weekends and holidays. It's a place where you can find the best that Greece has to offer: fresh ingredients, strong flavors, friendly people, and natural beauty that impresses time and time again.
The Peloponnese is a true culinary mecca, where Greek food culture is at its strongest and most authentic.
Did you know that the Olympic Games were held in four locations, three of which are in the Peloponnese: Isthmia, Nemea and Olympia. The prizes were nothing more than precious olive oil.

Peloponnese mythology and sights
The Peloponnese is also the scene of ancient myths. In Nemea, Heracles killed the famous lion and, according to legend, anointed himself with olive oil before the battle to gain strength. Olympia was the site of the ancient Olympic Games, where the winners were awarded an olive branch, a symbol of purity and victory. Competitors were also anointed with olive oil before dawn, making it a sacred part of the festival and sport.
Athena, in turn, gave mankind the gift of the olive tree, which brought light, nourishment and prosperity. This gift from the gods took strong roots in the Peloponnese, where olives and olive oil have been at the heart of life and culture for thousands of years.
Today, the Peloponnese offers travelers, in addition to its myths, the unique attractions mentioned above: the Nemean wine valleys, ancient Olympia, the olive groves of Kalamata, and many small mountain villages where time seems to have stood still.
